"Land of the Free" My Ass
The recent evacuations of Galveston and the rest of the Texan coast highlight a very important thing about America, the "Land of the Free", the "Free World". It's all a bunch of crap. New Orleans was 68% black, and look what happened to it in Katrina. Galveston is 76% White, and even before Rita is anywhere near, the place has been evacuated, the warnings are up, the resources have moved in, and all is in place to weather out the storm.
Of course some will say "oh, we learnt lessons from Katrina so we're better prepared!" Bullshit! The US gets on average three of four MAJOR hurricanes a year! Katrina was nowhere NEAR the first hurricane to hit the US! This is not something they didn't know the effects of. They knew, but they didn't give a shit because all the white people had already made their escape from New Orleans. Who gives a shit for a bunch of niggers? But Galveston is mostly white. A completely different story altogether. Officials are tripping over each others feet in trying to help the poor rich white folks get away and maybe do something to mitigate the PR disaster that was Katrina. Once they appease the media, who gives a shit what black people think? Its not like they watch TV or are influenced by the media anyway.
If this is how a developed nation, a nation that is the mightiest on earth, a nation whose 5% of the population control 20% of the world resources, treats its poor, and we hold it as the beacon of freedom and virtue in this world, then there is something seriously wrong with the way we look at freedom, equality and human dignity.
Freedom doesn't just mean we are able to talk whatever we want
Freedom doesn't just mean we can watch tit porn as and when we want to, on forty channels plus cable.
Freedom doesn't just mean we can do what we want to the earth and our surroundings, regardless of consequences.
Ask those black people who were left high and wet on 29/08 till a week later what freedom means to them. To them it means freedom from want. Freedom to pursue dreams, freedom to associate with whomever they desire, freedom to exercise their right of franchise, freedom to move about safely at night, freedom to walk into a restaurant or store without being stared at like a criminal, freedom to get a job they want... freedom to stay alive.
What is the point of being free to see fuckmenow.com through high speed cable when you are not even sure where your next meal is coming from, through no fault of your own but your skin colour? What's the point of being free to travel where you want, when you can't even afford to buy a car because you can never ever aspire to be anything higher than second head waiter? Again, because you went to a school that was "urban" (mostly black) and thus could never get real, good white boy education?
What is the point of living in the "freest country on earth" when laws exist to incarcerate you for crimes by upto 5 times longer than whites?
What's the point of living in a country that aims to promote freedom and democracy around the globe when it treats you like a third class citizen simply because of your skin colour/economic status?
What is the point of living in what is touted as the "model for democracy" when you are ten times as likely as a white man to be wrongly defranchised?
Katrina brought out a rarely talked about topic of American history. The American blacks.
LEt's look at a brief history of American blacks:
Slaves started coming in about 1620, and with the boom in agriculture in the South, more and more were "imported", like cattle. The south thrived on their blood, sweat and tears. What right do rednecks have to call black, poor people as siftless, lazy bums I haven't a clue.
George Washington, the very man who wrote "All men are created equal" in the US constitution, was a slave owner.
So was Thomas Jefferson (Although to their credit they did question its morality and tried to eliminate it slowly).
The Civil War of 1861 was essentially a war over the right to keep slaves. Imagine that, 300,000 people had to die just so the rednecks could not keep slaves. The south actually formed a rebel country of their own by seceding from the union and forming the Confederacy of the United States. It took four bloody years of war and a presidential assasination to abolish slavery. This was in 1865. It was when your father's grandfather was alive. Not that long ago, was it? IF you think it was, ask your dad if he remembers what his granddad was like.
Well, now that slavery was abolished, blacks were free right? So anything that happened to them can't be blamed on slavery right? WRONG!
Enter "Mr. Jim Crow". Jim Crow was a satirised dance version of black inferiority. Laws immediately were put into place to segregate blacks as "separate but equal". The SUPREME COURT of the UNITED STATES, that great protector of the "most sacred" Constitution, the same constitution that said "all men are created equal" ruled in favour of blatant apartheid in upholding a series of laws called the "Jim Crow Laws". It was apartheid disguised as "Separate but equal". Blacks were to live in slums, travel separately (translation: Third class), eat separately (crap food) and were forbidden to marry whites (miscegenation laws). They worked in white farms to pay off debts that they had to take under ridiculous interest terms meaning they were basically slaves, white chain gangs lynched black men and women whenever blacks tried to rise above the socioeconomic ladder (The Ku Klux Klan was the most famous group), all this done with the silent complicity of federal governments.
What these laws meant was blacks lived in slums, they went to schools that were decrepit, they were lynched (there actually were TRAIN PROMOTIONS advertizing lynchings), they were disenfranchised by having ridiculous "literacy tests" and were discriminated against in jobs (that's a nice way of saying the highest job a black could get was "head nigger" in a restaurant).
In the US apparently, lots of regions in the south are STILL like that (like New Orleans)
Oh it was a long time ago, right? WRONG
It was only in 1944, that black candidates were allowed to stand for office without hindrance, it was only in 1950's that ridiculous "separate but equal" laws were abolished, it was only in 1964, 19 fucking 64 that the Civil Rights Bill was passed by President Lyndon Johnson and ONLY IN 1965 were black people allowed to vote without hindrance by the Voting Act. 1965! Can you believe that?! That was barely 40 years ago. Your dad was a kid then. How can such deeply ingrained hatred towards a race change in such short course of time? Of course it can't!
Only in 1965 were blacks seen as human beings and given human rights and freedoms by the government. But New ORleans show how deeply entrenched is the racial divide.
Only when the white man is dying is the US government forced to act. I bet you anything that had Katrina tried to hit some whiteboy town, they would have evacuated that town faster than a fart in a crowded ballroom. All the support systems and evacuation systems would have been in place for days before landfall, even if they had to get some of the poor kids being shot in Iraq back, there would be aid up the wazoo, but a bunch of niggers? As Barbara Bush said "they're underprevileged, so this (hurricane) is working out very well for them". That one statement sums it all up.
